SFAS Expiration?
 

So, anyone happen to know offhand if I need to go back through SFAS. I was selected SFAS Class 1-93 (18B), but never attended the Q Course. I ended up getting commissioned (Infantry) in 1996 and getting out in 1999 as a 1LT(P). I am thinking about getting back in (enlisted).

(I imagine the issue would be STAR Landnav has been moved to SFAS...)

I posted this here because I was hoping for ground truth from someone in 19th Group.

I would say that after 14 years, you will need to go back through again. SFAS is designed to get a snapshot of you and your performance. I am sure that you have changed significantly in 14 years. I know I have.

We were looking at a policy that required attendance within three years, not sure what they finally decided to do, but I would bank on having to go back through, if you can meet the age limit.

I was pretty sure of that myself. In fact, it was after I went through SFAS that they removed what I believe was a 2 year limit.

I don't necessarily mind, per se., but the clock is ticking (I'm 37 now) and I have a LOT of work to do to get back in shape.

In fact, I'd almost rather go through the 18X pipeline with the Prep Unit at Bragg. I'm definitely gonna need some time back in the woods. It is pretty amazing how perishable some skills are... I mean I don't even remember what my pace count was, let alone what it is now.

You will not be able to do 18X - you are prior service and you will be going in under NG (19th Grp).

Do a search on the Rep. 63 program. The BNs have training dets dedicated to getting guys ready for SFAS, and they have a good track record of success. HTH.

Do a search for the consensus here about age and SF.

IMHO, you missed it this time around. SF is a young man's game.

Even if you made it, think of your potential teammates and don't handicap an ODA with an inexperienced old man to drag around. There is no one on this board that I know of who made it into SF at 37 or later.

New policy is still in the works. I've got a draft copy on my desk that references attendence of SFQC within 36 months of SFAS completion.

I just confirmed with the NG Liaison Office at Ft Bragg there is no expiration for SFAS. As long as you have completed SFAS, that prerequisite for the SFQC is met. There is a movement to change this, but as of today as long as you have been selected you are good to go.

Enlisted attendance did not count for officer candidates, last I heard.

Reaper is correct.
Officers attending SFAS will be placed in a leadership position during a Situational Awareness Reaction Exercise (SARE) and it is a essentially a GO/NO-GO event. Enlisted candidates are not evaluated in the SARE. Therefore, it is unlikely completing SFAS as an enlisted candidate will count for a candidate for the 18A SFQC.

I have no idea what SARE is, but I would like to think that everybody is being evaluated at all times. ;)

Not to jump in the conversation with something crazy, but i have been doing PT with some of the guys that were selected from Ft. Hood, Tx. One of the selects is 40 years old. Personally though i agree with the QP that said its a young mans game, but if i was you, and i thought i was up to the challenge, i would go for it.

Hahaha... I used to work at the Fort Hood SFRD office when it was in the theater next to clothing sales. I've never seen guys play so much ultimate football. We did ruck & run the guys alot also. On Thursdays we would meet at 1700 to make sure "no one wanted to quit" (??) and that SFAS dates were still good, blah-blah-blah. Not so much for the PT... we met to begin instilling "the team" mindset on those fellers who still had the "Army of One" mindset.
