2004 All-Army Small Arms Championships at Benning

http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/read.php?story_id_key=5768

We had 135-odd Soldiers shoot this year's All-Army matches. Only four SF guys showed (two 10th group and two SMU) .

Combat pistol matches were shot at 25, 20, and 15 yards, all with rack-grade M9s.

Rifle matches were shot at 200 (standing, and sitting rapid fire), 300 (prone rapid fire), and 500 yards (prone slow fire) with M16A2s and A4s. Targets were the "Dog" (F-type with V, 5, 4, 3, and 2 point scoring rings) at 200 and 300, and the 25-meter pistol E-type (5, 4, and 3 point scoring rings) at 500 yards. We issued everyone 77-grain Match 5.56.

The last four days was a Long-Range Firing School, with training in the morning with matches in the afternoon. Everyone fired M24s or M14s with M118 Long Range 7.62mm ammo at 600, 800, and 1,000 yards (two separate glass and iron-sight classes).

We awarded around 20 weapons, with the big prizes being the six Secretary of the Army select M1 Garand Trophy rifles and an M1911A1.

The "Joe" Trophy (Regular Army Novice E1-E4) was a Remington 870 Police Special that went to a COSCOM Specialist (a parachute rigger), and the Regular Army NCO Novice (from the Mountain Ranger Camp) won a SIG P228 Special. The high ROTC Cadet from Texas Tech won a SECARMY M1.

The guest speaker was LTC Gordon Roberts, the last active duty Army Blue Max awardee (from Vietnam).

Five Soldiers were awarded their Distinguished Pistol Badges (which made two guys double Distinguished), and a bunch of leg rifle and pistol badges.

SGM M took a SECARMY M1, a rifle leg badge and a pistol leg badge, and a bunch of novice gold and silver medals.

SGM K won a Glock.

I'll be the dumbass to admit I have no idea what a "Blue Max" is for everyone else's edification.

The rest of you out there going "Damn, glad I didn't ask that" are welcome, by the way. :)

Yeah, that kind of had me going for a minute too, "WTF; Blue Max? A WWI Aviator still serving in The Army!!??" Thanks for clearing that up
