Pig Hunt
 

Boar Hunt in Central California coast region on the Mee Ranch using Nessen Schmidt guide service. The guide estimated the weight of this boar at 225 pounds. I used a Model 70 in .270 Win. The ammo was a hand load- 140gr Barnes TSX bullet, 39gr of IMR 3031. Range was about 100 yards. I had to wait for this one to run between trees. When he got to the window, I fired and dropped him.

They taste very good. I keep the loins and backstraps, the rest goes into sausage.

He got one as well as his friend, a total of 3... Good times.

Divemaster- The cost is $575.00 for a weekend hunt. We have hunted with them for the last five years and have gotten to know the guides and they look forward to guiding us. We have never not gotten animals. They have hunting rights to over 100,000 acres of land. All fair chase, no canned hunts. Mark- thank you for the info and the outfitter endorsement. The wife and I have been looking for a CA hog hunt and this sounds like a nice fair chase hunt at an affordable price. Do they provide a bunkhouse or is it motel based?

We're rifle hunters and it sounds like my .300 Win Mag would be a bit much but we both have 30-06s we shoot well. The 150 grain Barnes TTSX is super accurate from her Ruger M77 and my Remington 700, a bit more so than the 180 grain in the same bullet. We had exit wounds on Texas whitetails. I know hogs are tougher but the TTSX penetrates well.

They have a 4 bedroom lodge with kitchen and laundry along with a large patio with a fire pit and oak fired Grill on the premises for $65 per person per night. There are motels in town but we prefer the lodge because it is close to the processing shed and the Final Final Bar. The Final Final is like a team house for locals. When we came in from our hunt, the Chief of Police was there.

Your .300 Win Mag is fine, so is the .30-06. My son uses a M70 in .300 Win Mag. He took a 275 pound hog at 300 yards a couple of years ago. I use my .270 or Rem 700 in .308 with 168gr bullets. We also use Barnes bullets since the area is lead free due to the presence of the Califonia Condors.

The guides will take you out in 4X4 pickups and also use quads. Nothing like going 60 mph up a ridge on a quad with a rifle, the guide and a dog, in the dark. The guides field dress and skin the animals. Processing is available for $100-$125 per animal. Leno, the butcher, will custom cut and wrap the meat. He also makes sausage for $4.00 per pound. I always get 5-10 pounds of Swiss sausage, it is delicious.

It gets very hot in the Summer, Spring is the best time, Fall and Winter next best choice. I was up there in August a few years ago and it was 109 degrees...

Will do. I have no idea what my schedule is like after 1 JUN, but working every day up until then. Cooler weather does sound like a better time. I remember what Ft. Hunter-Liggett and the Manchu Mile was like during the summer.
