What's your philosophy?

What philosophy or code do you try to live by?

I am partial to these:

"Be professional, be polite, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet." — USMC Rules for Gunfighting #21

and

"Don't be late, don't be light and don't be last."

Air.177 07-19-2004 15:39

I've always liked,"Always Cheat, Always Win" Personally

Huey14 07-19-2004 16:34

"It never hurts to be polite to a man, especially when you intend to kill him."

"Keep your friends close, and your enemys closer"

"Don't give way to buses."

D9 (RIP) 07-19-2004 16:51

"My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute."
-- Ayn Rand

That just about sums it up for me.

I also like:

"I swear by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine."
-- John Galt

Not quite the original, but the meaning comes out the same:

"You are better off keeping your mouth shut and just letting people think you are a fool, than opening your mouth and removing all doubt"

"Think before you talk yourself into stupidity"

AngelsSix 07-19-2004 17:39

Know what you are capable of, realize you are capable of more and learn something every day.

Kill them with kindness......I have learned that works like a charm.

Remember where you came from, don't shit on the little guy, because he will remember that on the way past you on the ladder.

"To every man, there comes in his lifetime, that special moment when he is figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered a chance to do a very special thing, unique to him and fitted to his talents;
What a tragedy if that moment should find him unprepared or unqualified for the work which would be his finest hour."

-Sir Winston Churchill

Jack Moroney (RIP) 07-19-2004 20:15

My philosophy about golf: I do not see any reason to expend any energy hitting anything with a club unless it screams or bleeds.

My philosophy when being interviewed to become a general's aide: I didn't go to school to be anyone's boot black.

My philosophy when querried about my lack of desire to serve on the Pentagon Joint Staff to enable me to be competitive in achieving general officer rank: The only time I would ever willingly wear a star is if I pumped gas for Texaco.

Jack Moroney:D

What Would NDD Do?

Team Sergeant 07-19-2004 20:22

Be nice, until its time not to be nice.

From a former team mate;

What comes around goes around, and when its coming around for the second time, its usually moving a lot faster....

Team Sergeant

Guy 07-19-2004 20:34

Words of wisdom right here!

My first trip was not "all of that".

My second trip was for keeps!

Re: What's your philosophy?

[after falling or hurting myself my mom would always ask me, when I was young] "Can you move it? ...you'll live"
that phrase shapes my life and outlook on how I get through shitty times.

another
Be patient and hit your objective when the time is right for you.

DDD 07-19-2004 22:43

"Just because I'm paraniod, doesn't mean people aren't out to get me"

God bless you Sir. Were there but more like you it would be a better military.

My philosophy was told me by my first fire team leader. "You can take care of your career, and let your men take care of themselves, or you can take care of your men, and let your career take care of itself. More of a good quote, but I still try to live by it.

NousDefionsDoc 07-20-2004 08:11

Great stuff!

Col - My philosophy on golf as taught to me by a very good sniper:
"Waste of a perfectly good KD range. Why, they even went to all the trouble of building us these little rests (Ts), marking off exact distances to the target stand holes and giving us those little red wind indicators. Now go get the guns out of the vehicle and load up."

LOL

Ghostrider 07-20-2004 08:25

God, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

What goes around comes around.....(although I like the 2nd part that the Team Sergeant had alot).

Better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.;)

My signature, most of the time.

The golden rule...do unto others.... (unless they really get on my last nerve)

What goes round comes round (I like the addendum on TS's entry)

brewmonkey 07-20-2004 13:55

Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.

No plan survives the first contact intact.

In the absence of orders, attack.

They are all cheesy and old but they work.

Sorry, you only got the water pistol version of the God Gun, with training wheels.

You minor powers also only work in your little fiefdom.

Don't mess with the Big Dogs, Counsel.

Sacamuelas 07-20-2004 14:56

a few phrases I came across that I like...

"No mistake or failure is as bad as to stop and not try again."

"Happiness is not the absence of conflict but the ability to cope with it."

"Don't take yourself too seriously if you wish to get any joy out of life."

I think it remains to be seen whether we have the will to finish the job.

Roycroft201 07-20-2004 19:57

A hundred years from now

it will not matter

what my bank account was,

the sort of house I lived in,

or the kind of car I drove.

But, the world may be different

because I was important

in the life of a child.

I guess we'll know in November.

Mine all have a certain theme:

There's something about the outside of a horse that's good for the inside of a man.
~Sir Winston Churchill

A horse gallops with its lungs, perserveres with its heart, and wins with its character.
~Tessio

There is just as much horse sense as ever, but the horses have most of it.
~ Anonymous

It doesn't start with a horse,
It begins with a frame of mind.
For the long run it's the test of the ring,
But in short it's the test of time.
Patience is Dressage.

There are 3 things in life that are inevitable; death, taxes, and shit happening.

Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer.

Karma's a bitch. Better stay on my good side.

Solid 07-21-2004 01:21

"Situation excellent, I am attacking!"
(I know, I know, every quote list has to have some Foch but this is a genuine approach to life!)

NDD wrote an excellent paragraph or eight on the SF mindset. Grab any contiguous sentences from that post and they will apply here.

One I picked up last night from my new OSS book:

"If you fall, fall foward." William Donovan
