Advise on a gun purchase

I'm thinking about buying this: Ruger Mini 14 $500.
W/ 2.5 x 10 x 50 Simmons As New Condition 12-360

It's in a gun store and is 'slightly' used according to the shop. Question is, I've never owned a mini-14 and I'm not sure what to look out for in a used one. It's just for target shooting though I might get back into the 3 gun meets if I can get back in shape.

I would prefer to get a AR15 but that's just a little out of my range for now.

If the rifle is in good shape is this a good deal? and what constitutes good shape?

Smokin Joe 03-31-2004 09:52

Which model Mini 14 is it? ranch or standard? (if it has scope mounts its a ranch). stainless or blued?

Mini-14's are good ranch rifles and thats about it. They should not be considered a "tactical" rifle (although in a pinch they will do the trick).

Also with that scope you will dislodge a lense or crack some part on it after about 200-300 rounds. I speak from experience I have tried all kinds of scopes on my mini-14 Trashco (tasco), Burris, and a Simons they have all cracked or broken in on fashion or another while on my mini. One of the only scopes that can handle the mini-14 is a Leupold, that is a hole lot of money to spend on that grade of rifle.

If I were you I would buy an AR if you can't afford the whole rifle buy it in parts and build your own. You will learn more about your rifle then you will ever care to know.

Just my .02 cents

You can pick up a brand new Colt H-Bar AR-15 for $800. If you are thinking about the matches I'd spend the few extra dollars and pick up the Colt.

The Reaper 03-31-2004 10:31

Concur.

The Ruger is a good carbine, but is normally a 3 moa rifle. The optics are overkill.

I would hold out for a good AR15 clone, like Armalite, Bushmaster, or Rock River.

Go to Auction Arms or Gunbroker.com or the printed "Gunlist" and check real world prices.

Good luck.

Thanks all for the advise.

Since it looks like the assault rifle ban is going to sunset, what do you think the chances are that the prices will come down?

IF it does not get renewed, or continued by Executive Order,

1) then mag prices should drop quickly, and scarcity for US made mags should go away

2) guns affected by the AWB would have pre-ban features restored, but should not change prices much as they still cost roughly the same price to manufacture.

You can already find deals on post and pre-bans if you shop, but I would wait and get one with the post-post ban features.

HTH.

TR

Sacamuelas 03-31-2004 11:03

If it sunsets, IMO, the cost of the new production rifles you are talking about won't come down much. THey will just come with the "pre-ban" configuration again. The savings will be in the high capacity magzines and folding stock catagories.

The prices of guns that will be affected are the current "used pre-ban" configuration guns that are currently limited in quantity therefore more highly priced.

Of course, I could be wrong... after all I thought NDD was "straight" until I saw him in a spider man costume and posting poetry on a professional soldier site. :D

edited.. TR beat me to it. Look like I was probably right, about several things in this post. LOL

Air.177 03-31-2004 13:03

The only real problem that I have with Mini-14s is the lack of quality magazines. Maybe Ruger will make Hi-caps after september, but based on their attitude toward civilian ownership of such things in the past, I doubt it. Also, $500 sound kinda high. We had an excellent condition Pre-ban Mini-14 that didn't even sell for that much.

All the things these gentlemen say are true about the Mini-14.. but they are still a very nice little gun to own. Have had not problem with magazines myself. I now have a m4clone too, but this is a nice little weapon.

I got this practically brand new(<100 rounds) from a cop that was issued a Colt for duty. $600 bucks with three magazines and the case, etc. Bushmaster AR15.

For TR and Team Sergeant... here are my latest pimp guns.
They aren't gucci'ed up quite as much as the prior. YOu Bullies!!! LOL

my wife had to come check in to see WTF I was getting my guns out for!!! LOL She was afraid I needed backup in here.

Team Sergeant 04-11-2004 20:40

Nope not mine, just a training aid for Jawbreaker. I had an M-14 back in the late 70's. Had it glass bedded and NM parts through out (a buddy in the AMTU), all done for a few bottles of good scotch. (I sold it. I know, a mistake.)

Yup. But it sucks for a backdrop. You can barely see the Kimber.

Sacamuelas 04-11-2004 20:59

Not you or TR... must have been another typo. LOL You hacking on the little rug in my office now? Whew, tough crowd tonight. I think I will go do something less dangerous for Easter Sunday night then surfing here in the weapons forum. haha

Oh thanks.. SMOKIN joe. Now you are the picture guru? HAHA I took that in haste to prove I had not been attacked by the MTV "pimp my gun" show on EVERY weapon. It was taken spur of the moment. LOL

Kyo-
good luck and I did "try" to help. LOL

:) ..I gotta give you crap about something don't I.

Sacamuelas 04-11-2004 21:07

Trust me... I laugh at myself when someone(TR/TS) puts things so clearly. Just reading those posts made me feel like such a "17 yr old wanna-be D-boy" for having that gun.. I got a good laugh at myself too.

I earned the bashing on this thread, I admit it. I still like the little SS mini-14.. its a fun little hunting wild hogs on foot/plinking at targets type gun.

Joe, I would NEVER hold a grudge... I just get even. :lifter

Pistol is fine. Let the hammer down, though, unless you are photographing a locked and loaded weapon.

As for the rifle, postban is not one of my favorites. You need to remove the blast enhancer from the muzzle. Non-standard mag? I don't trust them.

May I instruct you on the proper use of light, and inform you that the cute little light you have with the curly fry cord is nothing but a bullet magnet? Is that attached with a shotgun mag tube clamp? Were they all out of radiator hose clamps and Ray-O-Vacs?

Turn loose of some of that dental money and get another real flashlight like the Surefire in your pic, a 6P if necessary, with a tape switch and a 1" scope ring. Then get a RIS, RAS, ARMS SIR, or other quad rail foreend and hang your accessories there, not on the barrel.

Can provide a few other helpful tips, if needed.

TR

Sacamuelas 04-11-2004 21:47

TR-
So now you WANT me to gucci up my new pimp gun? LOL

Thanks for the advice, Sir. I am currently working on an aimpoint, quad rail which free floats the barrel and a surefire weapon mounted light.

Any other things you would recommend are always accepted by this jawbreaker. :munchin

curley fries chord, hose clamps, bullet magnet... you are making me infamous in this thread... dammmit!! haha

A storefront, a business license, and a tax certificate, before you get the FFL, thanks to the previous administration.

No more kitchen table gun stores.

FWIW, despite the electrical tape mounting system, I think you have a better tactical light system than our favorite dentist.

Yes Reaper! Thanks for posting my favorite slingshot rigged for night work. I shoot lead balls of varying calibers, also steel ball bearings. This is a custom built slingshot by ex SEAL (and great guy) who really does hunt with these. I'll work hard at figuring out to post my own pics here. Bill Ps, long distance target shown.
