That's pretty darn cool!
Thanks for the post and the photo. :lifter |
The Book
I received my book on Tuesday. It is a very good read and I found the information to be prodigious. My wife had the package opened and the book on my desk when I got home from work that night.
I will be reading it again as the months get closer to this experience. The wisdom is priceless coming from BTDT guys of this caliber. Thank you for posting the link. Back to lurking. |
Warrior Mentor,
Sir, I got the book a little over a month ago and I just started reading it a second time to go over and make sure I didnt miss or overlook anything. I know alot of thanks are in order and due for the book, but I'm not sure if thats enough for what you have done. Thanks again. JAG |
I just ordered mine. I will make a follow-up post once I have read it. Looking forward to it.

Engineer Tape?
In Appendix A (the 30 days to success) on Day 28 the homework says to "get engineer tape sewn onto uniforms based on SFAS SOP."
So...couple of questions on behalf of the guy frantically packing (on day 28 ;)) in my household... If one doesn't show up with engineer tape sewn onto his uniforms is this bad? On the packing list itself it doesn't say to have it sewn on. He's in the process of trying to rustle some up, but even if he does that begs the question of - what is the SFAS SOP for sewing it on? Clearly he doesn't want to show up with it done wrong and I can guarantee there isn't a shop at Huachuca that knows how to do it without detailed instructions. It is different for BDUs and ACUs? He's bringing both. I've searched the heck out of this board and anything else we can find, but we've come up empty. I figure since the author of the book posts here as well as a number of recent SFAS guys this might yield some informed answers. If the answers would be too much of a hijack, please PM me. Thanks!! |

IIRC, if it isn't sewn on, and properly, his sewing skills will be tested soon after arrival, normally at a time when he would prefer to be doing something else. I would find a shop and have them do their best effort. TR |
Engineer tape
Your'e given the SOP ahead of time, so take advantage of that and get them sewn up. Once you arrive to SFAS, the last thing you want to worry about is sewing uniforms.

Returned from Mountain Warfare school this weekend to find my copy waiting for me. Got halfway through it last night - what a collection of great info, even if you're not going to SFAS. And, with the proceeds going to the Warrior Found... come on, it's a win-win!
WM, thank you sir for a fine read, great advice, and generousity that's too uncommon these days. |
Which course, gagners?
|

School Site: https://www.benning.army.mil/amws/ Great school covering the technical aspects of mountaineering, climbing, knots and rope systems, altitude illnesses/treatment, and, of course, humping a ruck uphill... The winter phase covers winter survival (snow caves etc), skiing, snoeshoeing, ice climbing, etc. Had a QP in my squad as a matter of fact. Told him about the site. |
I did the summer phase back in '91. Great, but little known course, especially for conventional guys. Never got a chance to do the winter phase, so no ram's head for me.

91? It was still a pretty new course back then - founded in 86. I thoroughly enjoyed it. |

WM Sir, do you agree with all the instruction points, esp. once weight is introduced? |

Getting Selected, the book
Howdy.
Just ordered the book - a really easy way to support the good guys. Does it apply to the new, experimental 2 week SFAS as well as as it does the 'normal' 3 week class? I'm assuming the lessons therein will be generally applicable rather than highly targeted. |
Quote:
Not as much rucking in the winter phase compared to summer. Plus you should already know all your knots. Once you've got your "coveted ram's head device", check out the assault climber course. I went through when it was run by a pretty cool SSG. There were about ten of us in the class. 100% civies ;) Really cool stuff.. |
Wrote it so it would be evergreen...you'll still be walking long distances with weight on your back and blisters will still be an enemy....
Always looking for appropriate updates & corrections from guys fresh off the course to integrate into each reprint.... Speaking of reprints, 4th reprinting is hot off the press and shipping this week...with another 1,000 copies going straight to SOWF. They won't be running out any time soon! Cheers! |

Great post, WM. |
WM-
Finished reading the book, sir - great stuff... for any course. I guess the stats on selection speak for themselves - well done! Funnyman - 2 weeks til winter phase. I'll let you know how it goes. |
I have just received the book and I must say, it is an excellent resource to say the least! Big thanks to Major Joe Martin, Master Sergeant Rex Dodson, and everyone else invovled in the creation of this book.

Great information on the subject. It is always amazing how such simple concepts, push vs. pull and keeping your body inline, make all the difference. Can't argue with more efficient movement (especially when there will be an endless supply of destinations). Just ordered the book as well and am anxiously awaiting my mailbox to get pregnant :munchin. Thanks for the advice WM! Now off to do more PT..... |

I just ordered the book :D
I can't wait to read it all. Thank you Warrior-Mentor |
Thanks.
Dear Warrior-Mentor,
I'm a full time student at the University of Florida and have read this book three times already. Just put it next to the can and it was read in like 2 days. Great info. and very well put together, I searched the web for hours trying to find much of the information that was in your book. Only one more year of schooling and its 18 X-ray for me. Thanks Again. ~Joe. |
I too have the book
And there are tabbed pages all over it. I even had my fiance' read it for GP. One of the reason's I keep asking questions is from something I learned in the book, "find as many mentors as you can and ask them questions" I think that is the quote.
Great book sir, thanks for the TTP's. |
Oh yeah!
Still not sure about the anti-persperant for the feet. Does it really work?

WM,
Again, thanks for doing the SFAS Preparation Book. There's a lot of great things in there even for an old guy like me that will never be in Special Forces (especially the items on mindset). I like to go over things with my sons (8 & 5) to give them mental preparation as they grow up. One of my favorites is Bob Knight's Concentration Cycle (Concentration leads to Anticipation leads to Recognition leads to Execution leads to Completion). After drilling my 8 year-old with this for the past few weeks on the way to school, this morning he said "Ok, Dad. That's enough. I think I got it." So I started him on what you show in the book as far as the link between Thought and Destiny (Thoughts make Words make Action makes Habits make Character makes Destiny). He dug it, and had most of it before we got to school. As my 5 year-old gets older, I'll do the same thing with him. I know that they're just remembering this by rote for now, but hopefully it will click with them someday as I continue point out these things out to them and show how they're used in practice. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the great book. It is very motivating, and very well done. :lifter Bandy |
humbled
TR,
Thanks for the redirection to previous posts. There is so much info on here that I want to soak up and I sometimes take the easy way out and ask the question instead of putting in the leg work to find the answer on my own. I wish I would have known about this resource earlier, been enlightening in the last few days I've been on here. I was looking for the answer to my more specific question and I havent found it yet. Concerning the Arid-XX, Do I need to wait for it to dry before I sock up for the day? Not sure how the whole thing works. Anyway, great site and I'll be on here a bunch looking for more TTP's and thing's I havent thought of before tryouts and selection. |
Coach:
The key is being able to spell "anti-perspirant" or failing that, "deodorant". TR |
This book was furnished to me by my buddy in MOS training (18C).
It is truly an excellent read, maybe a little to quick in fact. There is a wealth of information in there, and I will most certainly be reading it again and again for extra insight. |
I recently purchased and read the book "Get Selected!". In it, there was advise to join a local orienteering club to practice land navigation since it is one of the key events at SFAS. I searched, I don't think this has been asked before. How different or similar is military land nav to orienteering? Any key differences? Thank you.

Good book and the money goes to a good cause. Quick read also. I finished it within two days.

Get selected
Greetings Gentlemen,
I just want to make sure that somebody knows that 'Get Selected' is selling on amazon.com for >$300. Is it out of print? specialops.org still has it for sale at $24. I know the proceeds go to charity, so it would be a shame for some entity to charge 12x the cover price just because they can. -L |
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...9/ref=dp_olp_2
$499.89 Wow! If that money's not going to the charity I'm very disappointed. |
Thanks
Thanks for the heads up. Finally got motivated to stop this...
New books are now listed at $50.00 each on Amazon (with a foot note encouraging folks to go to the Warrior Foundation's website). Signed & personalized copies are listed at $500.00 each. Amazon takes a $77 chunk of that...the rest is sent to SOWF. Special Operations Warrior Foundation still sells them online for $24.20 each at www.specialops.org ...or military can ask for them at your local Military Clothing Sales Store. Really hoping this helps send folks to the Warrior Foundation website to order it...they have a full time staff to handle the orders....I don't. We'll see what happens... |
