Introduction

Gentlemen,

First thanks for operating this community, it is truly invaluable.

Briefly, about me and how I arrived here.
I graduated with a BS in Biology in May of 2013 and shortly after submitted an OCS packet with the USMC. First class was reserve only, so I declined, and my second opportunity I was not selected. Finally I was selected and shipped to Quantico in Jan of 2015. During in processing a discrepancy in my application was found and I was sent home an encouraged to reapply.

I was frustrated beyond belief but began the necessary waiver process. It was during is time I again began exploring the 18X enlistment option, which I had explored prior to applying for OCS. To wrap this long story up, I followed my heart and today I reserved my slot for an 18X opening and ship to Benning on October 13th.

I'm glad to be here, thanks again.

Good morning,

My name's Keith and I am a "former" Marine 2621 (SIGINT) guy who happened to re-enlist in the army. I served in 1st Radio Batallion at KBay with the MEWSS element which is (or was) attached to the 1st Light Armored Recon guys (LAVs n such). No MEU deployments; just details here and there and 4 CAX exercises at 29 stumps in two different iterations (they go back to back). It was the late '90s.

In the Army I was with 1st Infantry Division, 2nd BCT, 101 MI BN. We deployed during the surge to Iraq and accept for a number of TST missions where I was the 240b gunner on a hummer with a hand me down asset from guys here, I was mostly a fobbit preparing a HUMINT summary. I enjoyed the work. It had a huge customer base and I got left alone.

Any how I am a SFAS casualty from 2005. I self assessed as being 5'3" the rucking was too much and I figured I wouldnt make the time allotted for the STAR course seeing people literally run by me (and I was getting slow...). It was my own fault. I did not ruck as much as I should have. Very dumb thinking back on it.

I am grateful to be able to partake in this forum. The stories and information are outstanding, at least in my humble opinion.

Thank you, and Semper Fi.

Hello to all, my name is Mark, I joined the Irish Army in 1998 and am still currently serving.
I spent ten years in support infantry spending time in all the weapons crews, everything from 81mm LBLM, to HMG's and ILSW using the Carl Gustav 84mm M3 with the Anti Armour platoon.
I am currently a qualified Armourer.
I have three tours over seas complete, one to south Lebanon, and two trips to Liberia.
I may be an Armourer now, but as is our ethos here - I still hear my platoon sergeant roaring at us saying "your job first and foremost is a platform to fire that weapon off!!"
I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hey, I'm a high school senior going to college soon, during which I will plan to enlist as an 18x. I registered almost exclusively for the use of the search function and to learn from the vast wealth of existing information in these boards, but maybe a situation will arise in which I might make a post so I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to do an introduction.

Thanks for everything you all do here and out there.

First off, I just wanted to thank you guys for hosting this site. I've been coming here for years now, and honestly, it's the only site I visit every day.

As for me, presented with the option of joining the Navy in hopes of becoming an aviator or staying home with the girl I hoped to one day marry, I chose the latter. Twenty years later I'm a software architect and we're raising our family in the California bay area. Probably the only good thing I can say about the majority of the people in my industry is they scare easily. Like the first time they approach me and see the hand loaded (dummy) rounds strewn about my desk. :p

Greetings QPs and other guests.

I go by Spalding. (Last name)
I'm 23 years old, and aspiring to join the SF ranks.
I went to a community college through a technical program intended to fill positions in the nuclear industry, and landed a very solid job in Radiation Protection after I graduated.

However, after a few years things have grown stale and this position is just not making the difference in the world and in my life that I went in thinking it would.

So I scratched the itch I've always had and enlisted in the Army with an 18x contract, believing I can make it, and hoping I can make a difference in this world of ours.

I've been browsing this and a few other websites for several months now, and joined to make use of the search function, and to thank the Quiet Professionals for running this site and for everything else they do.

I ship out October 13th for OSUT, and have been getting ready physically and mentally by following a lot of advice from you QPs.
Thank You again.

Greetings and introduction

Gentlemen, it is truly an honor to introduce myself to a group of individuals such as yourselves. Spending the last few weeks combing over this forum has already been a huge boon to my community knowledge and a humbling one for my ego; needless to say, said ego been checked at the proverbial door.

My name is Nick and I am a recent graduate from a four-year private college. I've been interested in the Special Operations Forces (SOF) community ever since I was a child, but it wasn't until my junior year of college that I had an experience and mentorship opportunity that showed me Special Forces (SF) was where I should set my sights.

I am signed into the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) with a ship date to One Station Unit Training (OSUT) on 21 MAR 2016. Until then, I am working on my family farm and focusing on training. I know I have a long road ahead and hope to every day demonstrate to this community and the SF community-at-large that I have what it takes to make it and work for and with the community.

Thank you for your time; I look forward to learning from and growing with the best.

Hi everyone; it seems popular to put your name on here but I'm not a fan of it, so just call me Tea. I've been a member on here since July 2015 and I'm here to mostly lurk and devour all the information that I can about SF.

My partner is an 18x candidate. I'm trying to learn as much as I can in order to have a clear idea of what he'll be doing and perhaps the best way that I can support him. He leaves for basic training in October, so the journey is just beginning.

Cheers,
Tea

I would suggest that you also refrain from commenting on what it takes to complete the SFAS and SFQC unless you are a graduate.

Good morning everyone. I am prior Army and worked in public safety as a firefighter/paramedic/rescue diver before I got married and became a father.

My purpose coming here has changed since I joined in Dec, 2011. I initially joined for personal self-improvement, but my goal has shifted towards self-improvement to serve others.

I see experienced Scouters here and would like to benefit from their knowledge.

Thank you for sharing your house with me.

Maple Flag 09-28-2015 14:07

Shockingly, it's been almost 8 years since my last post (and 11 years since signing up here), so I thought a refresh on my introduction might be reasonable and in keeping with the intent of this section.

Since my original introduction back in 2004 (back then in the general medical section - I don't think there was an introduction thread back then) I've traveled much more, trained much more, picked up another language, and learned a lot more about the world (I think) and about myself (I know).

I've posted this refresh on my own introduction because so much time has passed and because I'm planning to again regularly participate in this forum, which I consider to be among the most level headed of forums that talks about things I'm interested in.

I've updated my profile as well.

With respect, I look forward to the conversations.

(My original introduction can be found in the General Medical section, which I dug up with a search. Apologies for any confusion.)

Looks228 10-05-2015 23:33

Hello, I am a 20 year old from St Petersburg, Florida. After graduating high school I was on the border of following my dream and joining the army. But My parents didn't it was a good idea, and that I should follow in the footsteps of my siblings by obtaining a bachelors degree. As I was in college I quickly noticed that I was not in the correct environment. I didn't know why I was there, which resulted in me not caring as much as I should've. So I decided to leave the university, upon arriving home I went over my options, they included going back to school or enlisting in the army. In the meantime before I made the decision I enrolled in crossfit. I came to love it so much, all the people around me were so influential, caring, and loving. I came to find out that they all had military backgrounds. And the owner of the gym was a former green beret himself. From that day on I had no more questions of what my future intended. I went to the recruiter that I have been dodging for so long and set the date for me to take the asvab, I received a 113 gt score. Later that week me and my bestfriend got an 18x battle buddy contract and it's been history since. My ship date is October 13th, and i am enjoying my last days as a civilian before I start a long awaited journey.

Bakinam 10-06-2015 18:11

I'm up next.
The short version:
22
18X 20151013
So pumped to meet you all & conquer the suck with you guys.
Humble, confident & here to learn from you men that make what looks like a near death experience sound like another day at the office.

Before I say something that gets me killed, I am truly & humbly speaking from the side of a civilian with an above average civilian - which isn't exceptional - grasp on how the military works & what I expect my path to be.

I like to do my research. Who & why are my favorite questions to ask, so I have spent days browsing this site reading & re-reading things I have already learned from other research, asking other GBs, or simply reading the Army regulations attached to my contract. I have read every introduction post here starting from 2015. I've completed plenty other threads start to finish as well, mainly from the perspective of other men somewhere in the SF pipeline. One thing this website provides me with is what I consider an invaluable & truly hard to find inside account on what it's all about. Hence Quiet Professional, I suppose. I have never worm a uniform myself. Those of you who have, not only do I thank you, I'm here to see if I have what it takes to wear the same uniform. Here I am comfortably behind my keyboard - not on the business side of a rifle - I can say I'd fight for the right & lose to no one for just the chance to tryout. My accounts come from very privileged, personal & exclusive experience with true Green Berets, SEALs, Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Veterans & all those who support each of the men & women in uniform. I've had 12-14 years spent living on base & forever & a day living around military something. The sound of fighter jets rattling the cups on my living room table is a sound I hate living without. When it comes to the Armed Forces, I pay my respects first & a firm handshake follows. It's simply just what I believe in.
The only people who know much about me have asked weeks before I'd consider mentioning much. Why? Recognition, ceremonies, trophies & the like that can be publicly observed bug the hell out of me. I'm the guy who's given away all of my first place trophies or accolades (mostly cause they're all... plastic  ) Funny little story: After I signed for 18X, my fellow future soldiers got wind of the news (not even an infants crawl toward the end goal). They started cheering & teasing in good faith, "Oooohh! Special Forces!". I left the office immediately, I wasn't having it. Great guys! Love the brothers & sisters I'll meet with any tab or patch here in the near future.
Any of you tasked with running this site, or blogging your trusted input here, or asking your smart or silly questions so I don't have to, I thank you & salute you.
Forgive me if I missed any formality.

Despite what my forum name suggests, I ain't never been to Nam.
Sunny south side San Diego most my 22 year life & here in 6 days my path will take me to the just as beautiful Ft. Benning, Georgia! (lol)
Bittersweet! 6 days couldn't go any faster as August marked an entire year me working with my recruiter to sign for this contract that I have never NOT been qualified for. 11x, 11x Option 40, 92r, sheesh they offered me everything. I knew I was personally committed to the military as a whole, the Army in particular, but I truly only wanted one opportunity & that's 18x. After reading through pages upon pages of Army & Navy recruiting PDF military or gov files & a general grasp on what these guys were trying to get done, I really was not comfortable taking no for an answer & they were really not comfortable with me doing my homework. I came to the conclusion that they don't like A types. Furthermore, you'd be surprised at what you find in these documents that the recruiters don't already know themselves. They bought me lunch & gave me a shirt to add to my wardrobe. I salute them & I won't forget it. I switched districts instead of just offices, the next business day my new recruiters called me to MEPs for the 18x contract. My girlfriends idea. It's who you know, right? A hiccup got in the way, a week later they called me again for 18x. It became clear to me that this military stuff has the potential to be what you make of it & what time you're truly willing to put into it.
Finishing up about who I am, I make friends very easily while keeping a low profile. Chin up high, hat down low, head on a swivel. Situational awareness is truly an invaluable trait. Those who meet me don't forget me & I like it that way. I feel even better when all of those reviews are good ones. I find it easy to care about anything & I firmly believe in the age old saying, "To each his own." Everyone has a strength & a passion. I'm definitely a people person. I believe most people deserve a chance at happiness & prosperity & evil people deserve the chance to be met with more fierce competition & aggression than their holy book may suggest exists. I think stupid people fight fair & smart people, never unprepared, train in unfair conditions for the fight.

In my intro, I feel the need to say a little more because what intrigues me the most about SF is just who these guys are & why these men are selected for such a pivotal role in our military. Also, hopefully to encourage people to say a little bit more about where they come from. I really enjoy finding out who people are. Allow me to explain what I mean by that. I've met SEAL instructors, officers, enlisted men & candidates. All alike - very confident & at face value happy people. I've met Rangers & all the Rangers are like, "RANGER!" I've met Marines. "Rah! Pendleton bro! 29 Palms sucks!" Oh, by the way, 29 Palms sucks. Now, maybe just my luck, every time I've met a Green Beret no two of these men have ever been anything like the other. I'm told that the SF culture is truly one of a kind. They are immensely more driven, structured, insightful & successful than any other group of individuals I've ever met. & between it all I leave each conversation with one of these guys thinking, "What in the actual hell was up with that guy?" It intrigues me to no end. Somewhere, someone or something is breeding some extra ordinary personalities & from the outside looking in, I'd like to think I'll end up right where I need to be among people I can truly enjoy serving with. I'll go ahead & earn my stripes first.
Thanks for having me on the site.

Greetings.

Aspiring SEAL here. Grudgingly going to a community college at night, don't want to, but I'm paying for it. Anyway, aspiring SEAL and hoping to gain some insight into the 18D course as I want to be a SEAL medic(I believe that's the appropriate term, there's some inconsistencies between the term medic and corpsman when it comes to SEAL). I went to a military school my junior year of hs and loved it. Most of the cadre were former Rangers and I was really into the military after that. Fast forward a few years, my life is boring and I could tell my stepfather was grooming me to take over his construction company. While a respectable life, it wasn't for me. I enrolled into a community college hoping to transfer to a state school after a few semesters. Until last year when I met my aunt's son for the first time(my biological uncle's relatively new stepson). He was a former soldier in the 82nd and fresh outta the 5th SFG. Talking to him was a life changing experience. He got me into the idea of joining the military again. However, after reading up on the SFAS and Q, I realized that it wasn't what I wanted. He said if you're gonna join, don't half-ass it and join the best. So after reading up on other SOF units, I decided to go the NSW route. I love swimming and scuba diving, and blowing shit up, so SEALs it was. Got 2 more years left of school. Hope to get to know you bad asses well and talk to some instructors along with other prospective students of the 18D training course.

A quick introduction

Folks, you have my respect and deep appreciation for all that SF has done and will do to serve this great country of ours.
My Dad was 82nd Airborne and was recruited to go SF when I was a baby, however the imminent arrival of my sister, 4 years after my birth and the loud objections of my mother forced him to decline serving as a Green Beret and going directly to Vietnam. As I understand it my mother wanted no parts of my Dad going off to Vietnam while she would be left alone to raise 2 children and that's why Dad never got to serve in SF. Regardless, he was my hero then and is still to this day. As a boy I was outfitted with "fatigues" , just like Pop's and I chose to have it topped off with a Green Beret like my Dad was going to wear. Those were my favorite clothes to wear back then, even though Dad decided not to go SF.
Years later I joined the military and eventually wound up serving our country in a different manner.
I wanted to thank you all for the opportunity to "join" this site and learn more about the SF community.
As I'm now retired I have the time to devote to a passion of mine and that is writing. I am currently researching to write a historical fiction about a family who has served our country in a variety of Special Operations facets dating back to the Revolutionary War and continues to serve this country in that capacity in the war on terror we are currently waging. So time here is primarily about that historical perspective and being as accurate in the portrayal as I can be.
Additionally my family supports a few charitable organizations that deal directly with Special Operations families. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Navy SEAL Foundation and CIA Memorial Foundation are the philanthropic organizations that we primarily support.
The other reason I'm here is that I occasionally see news stories involving Special Operations that I have questions about and it makes sense to me to go to the source and see if these stories are drawing the attention of your community as well.
That covers it for me, if you notice me at all it will be just in posing questions that only someone who is active in your community can truly answer. Again, you have my respect, appreciation and my sincere thanks for all you do. Vaya con Dios.

Hello everyone,

First of all, thanks to everyone who came together to make this site happen. The enormous amount of information displayed here is priceless. Most every question I could fathom about SFAS or Special Forces has been answered here in some form or another, so I can't see myself posting much if at all.

Secondly, my plan is to pursue a Rep-63 contract with the National Guard upon my return stateside (currently TDY Afghanistan). I've been fortunate enough to work with Special Forces groups downrange (w/ USSOCOM program called MTRC) since early 2011, and made a few great friends along the way. Possibly even worked with some members on this site.

Not much else to say really. I'm a DoD civilian who works with test & eval./building/repairing/ lasers, night vis. & other various military EO.

Thanks.

Hey y'all,

I will start by giving my thanks for all who have served and to all who will serve.

I am honestly just thankful for the opportunity that this site offers me. I have been reading the forums for a few months now and decided to join just a few days ago. It is very humbling having access to all the experience that is on this site.

Currently, I am in my sophomore year of college. I joined this site to gain as much knowledge and to listen to as much as advice as I can. My goal is Special Forces. My current struggle is deciding whether or not I should finish my degree first. I will be making a thread about my situation. I am mostly looking for straightforward, honest advice right now. And that seems to be a strong suit of most members of this site. Any feedback is appreciated, other than that, I will mostly be here reading and not posting until I make that next step. Thank you all for your time.

I am in the process of enlisting in the GA ARNG currently. I have had some shoulder surgeries and am fighting to get my med waivers right now. Shoulders are firing on all cylinders now and I am ready to rock. I was denied once already, but it turns out the denial was because my waiver request was submitted improperly.

I am very interested in becoming a Special Forces Soldier. Once i come back from 11B OSUT (there is no "if," I will not give up until they let me in), I plan to spend the next year preparing to go to the SFRE with 20th Group in either AL or FL. I joined this forum to gather information from the people who have been there and succeeded.

Thank you in advance for helping me, and others, succeed. I will get there one day, and I will be sure to thank everyone who has helped me along the way.

Charles

Greetings and Salutations!....

I'm a 59 year old Professional Helicopter Pilot, and from the day I was born at the Ft. Benning hospital where my dad was a Basic Training Company Commander, I have had an ID (CAC) card of one color or another. Yellow, Green, Red, and back to yellow!

Spent most of my youth growing up back and forth in Japan, where my father was a DIA spook, and culminated his career as the Commander of the 500th MI Group, running HUMINT ops throughout Asia. Returning to the USA, I graduated High School in 1973, a year early, and at the ridiculously tender age of 17 years and 20 days, I reported to Ft. Ord for basic training. (I even remember my company....B-3-1!)

Finishing that, I was off to Ft. Sam for 91B school, and had my first interactions with SF; those who were in the 300F1 course. Boy, did I WANT that! Age was the problem, so off to Tripler AMC in Hawaii where I got involved in the Saigon Evac ops.

EOD Phase 1 followed at Redstone, and after $$ cuts, I was sent back to med field and ended up with the 498th Med Co (Air Amb) at Benning. Some of you old farts who misjudged your landings at Fryer Field may have had the pleasure of my tender loving care! (For you 18D's, we were the first to "experiment" with inflatable splints). Got a lot of experience with neonates doing MAST missions, and was in one of the first EMT III courses that preceded Paramedic designations.

Got tired of looking into the cockpit as a passenger, and applied for WOC Flight School. Upon graduation, I was held at Rucker for the Cobra course, which became my primary aircraft. (Went from "saving" lives, to actively "taking" lives... and OH MAN>>>> do I LOVE blowing shit up!).
Next to 503rd CAB in Hanau Germany for three years where I loved REFORGERS; participated in the 4-day marches in Netherlands each year, and completed the 100km/24hr Death March in Belgium two years in a row. Fun Fun!

Ft Ord next where I was in 7th ID, but attached to CDEC doing REALLY fun R&D and testing stuff, traveling all over the country from Yuma to Washington. Included the OH58-D, initial Apache configurations, the cancelled LHX, and other non-flying equipment tests. Left active duty and remained IRR until just a few years ago.

Flew in the Gulf of Mexico for a number of years for the oil companies, and had the distinct pleasure of the company of my favorite co-pilot...one of your alumni as well as the 160th's. Great friend...(That would by YOU, Vandy...if you're here on the site!)

Recruited out of the Gulf by Blackwater Aviation, where I spent the next five years; the last two as the Chief Pilot after the aviation side became AAR Airlift. Resigned when my Active Duty Air Force Wife returned from Bagram Deployment and was unexpectedly assigned to Germany as the Air Evac Chief Nurse. (I had to go to A'stan regularly to fly with my guys and show the company colors, but I told people that I was probably the ONLY American who was willingly going to the country in the hope of getting "lucky"!)

Now flying heavy helicopters on a month-on, month-off rotation in Boko Haram's playground. (Nigeria), and otherwise being a "camp-follower". Wife is a lock for O-6 next month, so we're probably still in for another 3-5 years. Sucks being away, but I get to spend a lot of time with my 8 YO son who just received his first rifle and started learning the fine points of safety and marksmanship on his birthday.

While I never had the opportunity to challenge the Q course, I have nonetheless had the honor of being a small spoke in the wheel in support. I have FLOWN you, flown WITH you, air-dropped TO you, rescued you, treated you, and covered you, but I'm still second-tier COMPARED to you! Lots of respect FOR you.

Damn glad to BE here! Cheers!

Introductions

I am a 24 y/o reserve soldier who has been interested in the SF community for the past year and I'm starting to take action now. I'm here to read and absorb as much as I can from the Professional Soldiers site. Much respect to all the men who've earned the title of "Green Beret", I aspire to be like you.
