Hello

Hello.

I am 35 years old. I grew up in the midwest in a very VERY conservative religious family. When I was 19 I took a religious leader's advice to "go west, young man" (yes he literally said that) to attend college. After school I lost my religion, founded a small company, and worked as a Computer Guy. At 27 I realized that my life was horrifically empty so I enlisted as an 18X, promptly failed selection, and served the rest of my contract in aviation which I ended up loving.

I deployed to Iraq in 2010-2011 as a UAV crew chief; it was a pleasure and an honor to maintain the safety and op status of the aircraft that overflew several dozen missions.

To be perfectly clear, I served entirely in a support role and I am not and never have been a Special Forces team member.

I currently live on the east coast and study international relations at a prominent university on the Charles river. Most of my posts here will relate to international relations, and your perspective on them. Most of the things I'm asking are for my personal curiosity, but occasionally I may want to get someone's perspective for a paper I'm working on. I understand that this raises concerns, so here are a few disclaimers:
  • Nothing I ask about here will ever be used in any publication unless specifically stated, and unless the poster gives specific permission for me to use it.
  • I always assume that permission granted on one statement does not extend to any other statement, regardless of context.
  • If I include any content from this forum in anything I intend to publish, I will always give the person cited a chance to review my work for clarity before publication.
  • As always, I speak only for myself and not for any institution of which I am a member.

If there are any other rules or caveats that I need to abide by, I'm more than happy to learn what they are and stick to them both in letter and spirit.

Thank you for running this forum and giving us the opportunity to interact with the SF community.

UAV crew chief, is that like a Cruise Missile Test Pilot? ;)

Welcome aboard.

I look forward to your discussions concerning "international relations"......especially since you are attending a Boston area college/university.......

Hello QP's,

I am 17 years old and currently in my senior year of high school and I am starting a career in Army SOF. I have already started myself down that path and plan on attending IET this following summer as an 11x with op. 40.

I am here primarily as a lurker to gather as much information as I can and may ask a question every now and again as i work towards my ultimate goal of attending and completing SFAS/SFQC and serving on an ODA.

I really appreciate this resource that you guys have put together and hope to one day call myself a QP.

I've visited the site off and on since 2011, when I first looked into an ARNG Rep-63. I'll be clear to pass MEPS in 161 days, so that provides a semblance of a timeline.

My family has been linked to the military for a long time, and I've always wanted to serve. The Special Forces, to me, seem like they would be both the most challenging and the most effective in our world right now, so that's where I want to be.

I'm here to learn.

...and a loud THANK YOU to those who have and are currently serving, both SF and otherwise.

Hello everyone. First of all, I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who has contributed their time and energy towards this site, particularly the QPs.

I am a former Marine officer working towards going the REP 63 route. I have spent the last few years after my service making myself more competitive for selection and I look forward to any advice that is offered. Thank you again.

You need to choose a new user ID.

You aren't an 18 anything yet.

Hello Everyone,
I just enlisted last month as an 18x recruit. I am shipping out in about 10 days.
I have been reading off from this site for awhile but did not know how to utilize certain features and writing my introduction little late.
But just wanted to show my appreciation for providing all the great advice and insights.
Thank you.

Lurking for years. Registered long ago to see photos and have continued to quietly lurk. I come from a military family, though mostly Air Force. Army friends but no QPs.

Primarily here to follow Spartan and Bill Harsey over in Edged Weapons. I live in Oregon and have met Bill and the Spartan group at the OKCA show several times. Great guys and Bill's sense of humor is as sharp as his blades.

Thank you for providing this resource. I'll return to my LP to listen and observe.

jkalaheo 11-08-2014 14:49

Okay first post...I am an 18x shipping on 17NOV14 looking forward to it. Grew up in Hawaii and I enjoy the outdoors. From swimming in the ocean and surfing, hunting, hiking, or even running anything to get outside is my happy place. Just trying to learn as much as I can from experienced and knowledgeable people whether it be on the PS website or talking to SF guys that I have met. To me knowledge is the greatest asset anyone going 18x could have. It would behoove anyone going into this program to not listen to the advice given hence...POST YOUR INTRO fellas

Hello all, thanks for having me here.

I turn 33 next week, prior 4 years USN. Working with a recruiter to join the AL Guard and work with 20th Group, and try out for SFRE. I know it will be a steep hill to climb, and time is working against me here...but I do know Crip from another forum (he is pretty much my hero lol) but I know he started his SF journey around my age...so it keeps me rolling on towards the goal!

Again, thanks for having me...I will keep my eyes/ears open and mouth mostly shut :D

I am a prior service Marine that served with 4/4 A Co. I am college educated, and a small business owner. Grew up in the hills of West Virginia. Am just a good ol' boy from the country. I have jumped through all the hoops to find a recruiter willing to work with prior service, and am going to MEPS next week to sign my 18x contract. Thank you everyone for all of the information, and thank you to the QP's who run this board.

First of all, thank you for accepting me to your site. My name is Pete, I grew up with Green Berets around in my childhood. As I grew older I befriended others in the SF community and was looking forward to joining the military with the goal of earning the tab. Due to uncontrollable circumstances at the time, I missed my window and regret it to this day. Since then I did what I could to support and give back to the community that taught me so much. Any support I can give is truly an honor! Even though I'm a civilian I will do my best to contribute to this great site. One of the reasons why I applied to become a member here is to pass info along about an individual that has been scamming and threatening both men and women in the name of the Green Beret. I did pass along much of the Info to the appropriate contact and it really is upsetting that the person I reported has been committing crimes and bringing negative attention to the elite. I also joined to offer my services in anyway I can to support the SF community that has given me so much throughout my life. Anything I can give back to all those that selflessly sacrifice their own lives is again truly a humbling honor!

I hope this posted in the correct location, I use my phone for my computer and don't want to start off on the wrong foot!

Also, if I can't get online tomorrow, I want to personally thank all of you for your service and wish you all a Happy Veterans Day!

Thank you again,
Pete

marn 11-11-2014 20:30

Hey, thanks for having me. I did my initial 4 as a 63H and then went IRR for about 4 years before joining the Reserves. In my time away I utilized the GI Bill and became an RN. I'm going to school to reclass to 68W in Jan.

In 2008 I was participating in the SF PT program they have at Hood, basically run by the guys who pass SFAS (and recruiting) while they're waiting on a school date, with plans on going myself. I deployed with my unit, and afterward, I just wanted to ETS and spend time with my fiancée at that time --as is typical, it was rough on our relationship. I'm 29 years old now, and I'm left wondering how things could have turned out differently. I believe I am more mentally prepared than I would have been then, and believe I can make a valuable addition as an 18D.

That is the goal, and I'm trying to decide on the best route in reaching it with the information found on this site.

Thank you.

Hello to all,

My name is Luke and I've been lurking for a year or so, but finally decided to register so that I can access the forum features that make it easier for me to research. I am currently in the process of signing an 18x contract, and am very grateful for the information that has been made available to us hopefuls. I'm not here to ask too many questions, if at all, because half to fun for me is figuring everything out myself and over time. Again, thanks for helping us out!!

My name is Nate I am currently with the Iowa Army National guard. Originally 11B changed MOS' after 5 years and now I am a 91F. In the begining I was planning on going for TACP but after some Goruck events and doing my research I have aspirations of going for the Green Beret. So I come here looking for advice, and networking because I feel that if I want to become something I need to surround myself with people that are where I want to be or have been where I want to be.

Thank you for allowing me to be on this forum and doing what you do.

My name is Wes. I am a former 35F with the 323rd MI BN our of Fort Meade, Maryland. Currently, I work for DCTC at DIA and primarily provide support to JSOC. For OPSEC purposes I won't go much further than that on open comms.

I am currently helping a friend of mine set up a contracting company (Native American/Veteran Owned) to go after some State analytical and PSD work.

I am here for advice, knowledge, and to link up with good people and former shooters who are looking for work on the civilian side.

My apologies if protocol was side stepped. I meant no offense.

Served on AD and in the Reserves from May 1971 till they kicked me out Oct 2013 in a variety of Med and MI MOS. Was with ACO and HHQ CO, 3RD BN, 11TH GRP in the late 70's early 80's. Took the ABN course at Ft. Devens, but found later that hearing problems precluded me from attending the Q Course. My last deployment was to IZ in 2004 with CITF. Happy Thanksgiving to All! We still have much to be grateful for in this country.

After creepin for some time, I require the use of the storied "search" function.

I served in the Marines from the summer of '05 til the summer of '13. I was a field MP, not one of the blue falcon PMO MPs that work on the bases giving out tickets and bitching about your lifted truck being too high. The field side of the mos usually does convoy security, but as of late (due to the drawdown) we have been tasked with advisor missions. My last pump was on an advisor team and I loved it. It was awesome training our guys, and although they may not have been up to American Military standards, they were at least "Afgan good". It was pretty cool teaching our guys from the bottom up. Anyways, I got out about a year and a half ago and started school right away. I have an affinity for math and mechanics so I decided to try my hand at mechanical engineering. If you were to go back in time to the high school version of me and tell me that I'd be going for any sort of engineering degree I'd tell you to kick rocks. In high school I just wanted to graduate and start my career in the Marines. After my first 4 I decided to re-up and see if the political bs and dick measuring subsided at all after a couple promotions. To no avail, there was still alot of insecure arrogance. So I decided to get out and start school. My plans as of now are getting the degree and hopefully getting into the xray program. I loved serving, I would rather do it with professionals. Any questions you may have, feel free to ask. I look forward to learning alot from everyone here.

Hello all, my name is Jeremy. I have been in the army for sixteen years and I am stationed at Ft. Campbell. To keep it short, I’m a long range planner and advisor. This site came highly recommended to me from a colleague. I’m looking to learn from different points of view on a variety of subjects (conflicts, politics, cultural experiences and lessons learned). From my experience, talking with retired guys from my community has been a great resource of information and from looking through some of the profiles here, this seems to resource rich environment. Message me for further details.

Hello everyone!

I'm Alexander, and happily enlisted this fall as a Ray. I am now 20 and have wanted nothing more but to join since I was 4 years old; my father has been my biggest inspiration, as he did his hand upon handfuls of years in. Just received my Associates and will be leaving in a few months for OSUT. I'm pleased to have taken all the advice I have read from threads and implement the tips into valued practice before I start this long journey. I've been an avid reader for some time now. I am motivated, and dedicated, and will be carried out of this dream only on a stretcher; NO other way. Victor Whiskey's are NOT my kind of people. Best wishes to all of you on similar paths, and Thank You to all the Professionals disseminating their wisdom to those worthy.

Happy Holidays.

Good morning gents,

I am a Reconnaissance Marine, at 4th Recon Bn. I am in the midst of an interservice transfer to the Army in the hopes of getting the opportunity to go to SFAS. I had the easier opportunity to go to MARSOC, but i followed the advice of several of my mentors who all recommended to just try to get to SFAS instead. I am here to learn, gain SA and ask a few questions.

Thank you.
