My first POW/MIA bracelet was picked up in the BX in Ramstein in 1970 or 1971. I don't remember the name, an Air Force pilot lost over SEA. I was 7 years old. About two years later my dad showed me an article in the paper about a POW coming home...it was the same guy. I wrote him a letter thanking him for his service and welcoming him back to the states, and enclosed my bracelet.
The names from this thread bring back many memories...and I would add the names of Chad Gonsalves and Shawn McCloskey to the list. Both were outstanding teammates...both taken too soon and too young. |

I'm wondering if I can replace my old POW/MIA bracelet... it was the main reason I actually knew a little about SF before I met SGM B and MSG H in 1978, I enlisted 3.5 yrs later after SMP/ROTC, including ABN, CTLT (Benning) and Adv. Camp at Ft Riley in 1980 during the heat wave. It broke that fall upon return to school.

Having lost so many friends since I've been in, as many others here have, I've found it hard to chose one brother to "remember" on a bracelet. A while back, NGB gave out metal "American Hero" bands to returning soldiers and families in the National Guard. Since 2005 I have worn one in rememberance of all my brothers who have given it all as well as those who still are alive to fight the good fight. With the exception of a few metal detectors and CT scans, it hasn't left my wrist.

For those looking to have a bracelet made or replaced..
I had this fellow on ebay create one for my namesake. He worded it as requested, which was not the stock two liner. I was very pleased with the results. Quote:

USArmy 25SEP93 Somalia This was the first one I ever got and I've worn it religously ever since. I've had others made as I've lost brothers over the years, but this is the one I wear. I can't seem to replace him. |
