Flies
I checked it out....great looking flie. I bet the gills will tear it up.
I will go to size 8 and some size 10 but that is the smalliest I go. I do that mostly on bluegill flies and such. I prefer to use larger hooks where I can see em better.:D |

Haven't tried fishing for gills with a fly, not too many places to find them here in Oregon but they are here. The "Octobolator Caddis" (my made up name as it is part October Caddis with some Stimulator style front hackle) is for fast water and trout. The extra hackles help it float and our October caddis is a large very orange insect that hatch about now. Agree with larger hooks when possible for seeing. |
I checked out that website. Pretty cool stuff. I have always admired those size 12 trout flies. Some of those things are micro realistic, now that is skill! Anyone can tie a half ounce of dear hair and cut it till it looks kinda like a fish. The real skill is when you have to be a perfectionist with every wrap and make it look like a larvae or a small midge.
Habu-MFFI 175, Do they still have that fishing club you posted? It seems that the site is down or canceled? BTW your flies are looking pretty good. |

I made an update to the website for Fayetteville Anglers. I just posted it wrong. Usually when I put a web address down I will go back
and try the link to see if it works. Evidentally I didn't do it this time. http://www.fayettevilleanglers.com/ Here it is again just in case. We are heading to Ft Fisher for several days if anyone is wanting a fishing trip. Camping and fishing along the Cape Fear River at Ft Fisher Recreation Area. For those not in the know, this is a military recreation place. Great place to rent a cottage, mobile home or just to camp out. http://www.ftfishermilrec.com/ |
Really nice work
Those are some great looking flies.
I started tying off and on about 10 years ago just a few years after I moved from CA to MA. Figured since I am in New England I should start fly fishing. Started out buying hoppers from LL Bean and saw that I would soon be bankrupt. I then started buying from ebay and realized I was supporting sweatshops. Plus the flies looked good but didn't last. I have a small pond in my backyard and it's full of bass and perch or some kind of sun fish. Also have caught some cat and pickerel. I am still very sloppy when it comes to tying but every now and then I get one right. If I could tie like you I would just frame the flys for display. Again, well done! |

It's nice to be back
Bill Harsey,
It feels good being home, sorry I did'nt got your way last time out. These photos were taken maybe two weeks ago. West of Ft. Collins, CO up the Poudre River Valley. I've got property along wilderness line with great water. This particle 5 acre pond belongs to my neighbor, it stocked every 3 years with Donaldson Trout and Rainbows. The Donaldson are a hi-bred cross. They hit hard, dance and fin walk and run. After a strike of a 10"er you will think you've got a 18" lugger. The Rainbows are more aloof, resting during the day until the evening sun had settled. One has to wait about 30 minutes for conditions to change, surface temperatures drop, a new hatch unfolds and then its on for the Rainbows. This pond is great for kids when big water is a bit intimindating or overwhelming. I often come here to remind myself that I can still catch fish when I've had days when I could'nt buy a cloud, and the osprey are flying. The bottle of Jameson was a sweet reward for a great day with friends. p.s., I need you to build a knife, a recent 18D grad will be returning to Colorado soon. Send a PM when you get a chance. |
