Thank you all for your kind comments, and yes that is Dave Locke. We were a "neat little band" in the 5th Group S-3 shop under Major Craig Nickerson. Trying not to feel "banished" (we weren't . . . most of us;)) . . . important jobs and someone had to do them (sometimes armed with silly string). Man, you can see in the pics how happy a day that was for y'all.

Me and the wife got married two months after you, and I feel the same way. I am a lucky man she let me hang around.

ZonieDiver 04-09-2011 15:56

Talking about smiles... "Offroad" got home yesterday - safe and sound. There are big smiles on his face, my daughter's face, and that of my grandson... not to mention the dogs. (Yes, dogs can smile!):D

Gypsy 04-10-2011 14:27

Congrats Dozer, and to you as well ZonieDriver on the homecoming of Offroad!!

My tour is finally over and I fly home this week! Have not seen my family in a year! I can not wait to see my 1 year old daughter again. :)

Dozer...congratulations on "22 with YRFL"! Wishing you many more!

My bride and I celebrated our 42nd on March 22. I met her while at SFTG in '68 and we married in '69 just before I left country for a year. I would have posted that two weeks ago, but we were having too much fun celebrating (Cialis script had just been refilled)!

On a separate note.....this morning, the 4 year-old granddaughter said (after watching a DVD of Elvis in "GI Blues" for the gazillionth time).... "I don't want to be in the Army because I don't want to have to learn all those stupid songs!"

Your granddaughter doesn't have any Elvis in her?

On to my Happy News...received an email several weeks ago about NASA recognizing Military Families for their next scheduled launch. So I went to their site and registered the family. Found out today that we have been accepted!

Here's part of the email:
NASA has provided an opportunity for military families to participate in a multi-day celebration culminating with the Space Shuttle launch. We are pleased DoD has reached out to the National Military Family Association to help share this incredible opportunity with military families.

Considerations for participation:
• You must be a military family; the opportunity should not be extended to neighbors or friends who are not military families. Space is limited and ID’s will be required.
• Military Families will need to provide their own transportation to Orlando and lodging (if applicable).
• Military Families must take DoD sponsored buses to the Kennedy Space Center and Causeway on Launch Day (no POVs will be authorized)
• The events planned are focused on school-age children, and at least one activity has an age restriction of 12 years or older.
• Launch day will be a long, but exciting and engaging day! The buses are not expected to return to Orlando until 12AM-2AM.

Thursday, April 28 --L-1/One Day Before Launch there will be an afternoon of space related hands-on activities and demonstrations at the Orlando Peabody Hotel hosted by NASA education specialists;

Friday, April 29 --L-0/Launch Day –a special treat with military astronauts and spouses at the Peabody as they discuss with families ‘TDY to Space’ and then get families moving with ‘Train Like An Astronaut’ fitness challenge. A mission overview on STS-134 shall be given and then families will board DoD sponsored buses for transportation to Kennedy Space Center and its Causeway. Launch is scheduled for 3:47 pm.
Military Families will have the opportunity to participate in a special LEGO: Build the Future event on the Causeway in advance of the launch.

I don't know who's more excited, me or the kids.

1stindoor....yes sir, she has plenty, and loves to watch "GI Blues". Guess I failed to communicate the "happy thought" which is "Out Of The Mouth of Babes" or as Art Linkletter used to say, "Kids say the darndest things". It brings a smile to the face to observe the grandchildren grow and develop daily/weekly/monthly....:)

Whew...I was a bit worried at first. I didn't know of any child without a bit of Elvis in them....well except for Michael J. Fox...who was the anti Elvis, but I digress. My kids used to love listening to his CDs when they were little.

It came from an old song written by Mojo Nixon, part of the lyrics were:

Elvis is in everybody out there.
Everybody's got Elvis in them!
Everybody except one person that is...
Yeah, one person!
The evil opposite of Elvis.
The Anti-Elvis

Anti-Elvis got no Elvis in 'em,
lemme tell ya.

Michael J. Fox has no Elvis in him.

For a "happy thought of the day"...that's pretty harsh...I suspect the arrows to start getting launched any minute now. On the other hand, 8 years ago, she said, "I do."

I enlisted on January 28th, 1986. As soon as I finished my oath, we all gathered around the TV and watched the shuttle launch. Didn't go smoothly...but still provided a once in a lifetime experience. Makes remembering the date easy.

Congrats on your anniversery!:)

I also remember the shuttle launch that day, it is burned in to my memory like a banding iron burns flesh. It is funny the things we remember.......

Happy Thought today is that in one week, I will be the happiest new resident moving to Scottsdale, AZ. Getting there though, is going to be fun!!! 12 hours to Albuquerque, then 7 on in to AZ.

Ahhh, the open road of the United States of America, and all the fun a blonde gal can have along the way!:D hehehe

Am excited to start my new job though, and scared as hell at the same time...now that is a Happy Thought indeed!!!:o

Free fuel!
They guys running the truck shop across from our UPS hub save some of the (clean) used hydraulic/transmission fluid from their changes.

Goes right in the tank of the '77 Mercedes.
Smokes a bit, but runs great.

Events have a way of doing that. I was Tower Branch Chief. It was a Tuesday and Charlie Company was in Tower Week. It was so windy (> 40mph) and cold (wind chill near zero) that we cancelled training after two hours and sent the troops back to the billets. It was the only day we cancelled training in Ground or Tower during my 3.5 years in the 507th. We were talking about how we were gonna finish the training week and watching the Challenger's launch in the instructor's lounge.

Tragedy and success remain a part of the human experience. Congrats on your enlistment and career.

I just went out to get the mail before leaing to go tutor a high schooler this afternoon, heard the sound of radial engines, and looked up to watch a silver B-17 fly by at around 800-1000' AGL. A true bennie of living near the Addison Airport and Cavanaugh Flight Museum.

When I drove by the museum the other day, there was an F-105, a Mig-17, a C-7A, a C-47 in D-Day markings, and a CH-34 Kingbee parked on the inner ramp.

On that day I happened to be a student at the TOW/Dragon gunner school at Bragg. I am not 100% sure, but the shuttle breakup happened either just before our lunch break or during it. I learned about it when I went back to the team room for something or other.

When I returned to the class I made a remark about having taken out the shuttle with an errant shot from one of the TOW tubes. The National Guard people attending the class took immediate offense to my remark, especially since most, if not all of the TOW rounds belonged to them. They must have momentarily believed that it was possible to do so. Those would have been some damned long wires.

Ha! That would have been tantamount to a fireman setting a house on fire just to catch the rush of racing to and putting out the fire.

Can you imagine the congressional hearings that would have grown out of something like that? ;)

Yeah, they had absolutely no sense of humor at all.

My 16 year old son gave a speech during his Eagle Scout Court of Honor in March that was truly moving. It talked about the responsibility that comes with rank, and intertwined the life of an Eagle with the interdependence of man, and the responsibility we have for each other.

The speech impressed the Council Executive enough that he asked my son to give it again at the annual business meeting of the Council.

Now my son has been asked to speak as the representative of our BSA Council at a commemorative memorial ceremony being held at a nearby university for Garrett Floris Lee, an Eagle Scout and a 7th Cavalry Trooper who was killed in action at the Battle of Ia Drang.

I am a very proud father.

Edited to remove the word former before Eagle Scout. Once an Eagle Scout, always an Eagle Scout. I know better......

Very good, you'll enjoy it.

There is a thread here at PS.com titled "The Code". Jack is a quest member of PS.com and would appreciate any thoughts, questions, statements you might have after your son reads it.

Others have made posts as well.

My son's team is doing really well - he's the youngest on the team but has speed and a boot to match the older kids. He's logged several assists and a goal thus far this season. He's also found a good balance between aggressive tackling and playing angles on defense.

The conference was a good time - anytime I can get travel expenses paid weekday trip plus a check just for talking for 15 minutes is not bad. The open bar during the evening session was my favorite part.
