I live in the desert so my priorities are driven by that fact. I carry the Sawyer extractor because there is a high concentration of snakes in my AO. I carry the belt trauma kit mostly because I commute on a motorcycle and must prepare for the eventuality that I will have an accident or be hit by a car, with a secondary purpose of stopping bleeding if myself or another student is injured. Since I am unable to carry a handgun I have opted for the E2D and CQC10 to increase my survivability in the event of a violent encounter. I live approx 15mi from my school with two sources of water in between which is a god send here in AZ. All gear weighs in at about 5 lbs in addition to my school supplies which would be offloaded en route during an emergency situation. On my motorcycle I carry a set of Frog togs rain gear which can be used as intended, and also as a windproof layer in the event of storms, rain or dust. My Cordula and Kevlar rain gaiters, when used in conjunction with jeans and boots, make a passable, improvised snake gaiter. I also carry a heavy sweatshirt on my bike year round, because a well insulated 98.6 degrees sure beats a non insulated 120 degrees. |

It's issued down here as a consumable in black. From memory I think it's 2.5mm thick……can't recall the break strength on it, but certainly less than 550 cord(and a good bit thinner). From memory I've got 6m(about 20 feet) of fishing line and hoochie cord each. On my primary ALICE Pack I run both hoochie cord and 550 cord in a weaved pack handle on the frame that stows away with some "calamari ring" slices of bicycle inner tube rubber so if I run our of either as a needed consumable I can always unravel my pack handle for a bit of spare. To be honest, the 6m is based on just fooling around a bit and space/weight consideration. I haven't tried to "live" it. I help run a course with a survival phase and I'd like to consider incorporating a self-made survival kit component into it for self-learning/development, so this thread(and others) is helpful in that effort. |
I just ordered several short rolls of Spectra braided line off eBay from a company in Hong Kong.
At $3.50 per roll, delivered, I don't know how they can do it, but if the line is genuine, it is going in my kit. I am retiring the very cool but low capacity peanut lighter for a mini-BIC. I did get an inexpensive Cree headlamp for Christmas that is incredibly powerful and is rechargable. Not for my EDC or kit, but it is pretty handy at night, especially when scanning for wildlife.
