According to several articles I've read, fighters on the rooftop of the compound opened up on the helicopters with small arms and RPGs before the choppers landed. One helicopter was too damaged to make it back out and they blew it in place before exfil.

Allegedly a women was shot while being used as a shield by Osama.

Here is what I found on Aljazeera site regarding OBL death, as it was reported from Stratfor Global Intelligence.
Main points.

-OBL was hiding in Abbottabad 50 km northeast of Islamabad ( the article say its 56km) , and 150 km east of Peshawar.

-OBL was hiding in a new building ~5 years , that thought was made for his hiding.

-Operation took place around 0100-0200 (GMT) Sunday.

-Operation tooK 40 minutes, ended by the killing of OBL, his Son , and body guards.

-The article mention the use of helicopters in the attack, and the down of one.


سرب معهد ستراتفور للدراسات الاستخباراتية المعروف بقربه من المخابرات المركزية الأميركية بعض التفاصيل عن العملية التي استهدفت زعيم تنظيم القاعدة أسامة بن لادن.

وقال في تقرير مقتضب إن بن لادن قتل في عملية نفذتها قوات أميركية خاصة في مدينة أبوت باد الواقعة على بعد 56 كيلومترا عن العاصمة إسلام آباد، وسط معلومات عن تعاون استخباراتي باكستاني في تقديم المعلومات الخاصة بالعملية.

وبحسب ستراتفور، كان بن لادن يختبئ في مبنى جديد لا يزيد عمر بنائه عن خمس سنوات مما يعني أنه أعد أصلا كمخبأ لبن لادن.

وبحسب شهود عيان في المدينة، شاركت طائرات هليكوبتر أميركية وسقطت إحداها في العملية التي تمت بين الساعة الواحدة والثانية بعد منتصف ليل الأحد بتوقيت غرينتش، مشيرا إلى أن المعلومات الأولية ذكرت أن بن لادن وأحد أبنائه كانا مختبئين في منزل تحت حراسة مشددة لكن دون أي اتصالات لحظة وقوع العملية.

وينقل التقرير عن مسؤولين أميركيين قولهم إن العملية استغرقت أربعين دقيقة اشتبك فيها بن لادن وحراسه مع المجموعة المغيرة التي قتلت بن لادن وعددا من حراسه وسط معلومات عن مقتل ابنه أيضا لدى اقتحام المجمع.

اللافت للنظر في تقرير ستراتفور قوله إن الاستخبارات الباكستانية قدمت عونا معلوماتيا لكن الحكومة الباكستانية لم تعرف بتفاصيل العملية مسبقا، مما يشير إلى أن الخطة بقيت طي الكتمان حتى لحظة تنفيذها.

وذكرت مصادر إعلامية أخرى أن مدير المخابرات المركزية الأميركية ليون بانيتا -المرشح لتولي منصب وزير الدفاع خلفا لروبرت غيتس- استدعي إلى الكونغرس في وقت مبكر من صباح اليوم الاثنين (بتوقيت غرينتش) للإدلاء بتفاصيل العملية.

I'm inclined to agree with this too... However, if this is the case, why would President Bush issue a statement of commendation?

Also, I know this is very moon-landing, but doesn't the corpse picture look kind of PhotoShopped?
